When joining two independent clauses (complete thoughts that can stand alone as sentences), a comma is often used before coordinating conjunctions like "and," "but," "or," etc. For example, "She likes to read, and he prefers to watch movies."

Setting Off Introductory Elements-

Commas are used after introductory words, phrases, or clauses. For instance, "However, he managed to finish the project on time."

Separating Non-Essential Information-

Commas set off non-essential or non-restrictive information in a sentence. For example, "John, who is my neighbor, owns a bakery."

In Numbers-

Commas are used as thousands of separators in large numbers. For example, "1,000" or "10,000."

In Dates and Addresses-

Commas are used to separate parts of addresses (street, city, state) and in dates to separate days, months, and years. For example, "December 25, 2023."
